Caring for Your Embroidered Treasures: Tips to Preserve the Beauty and Longevity of Embroidered Cushion Covers & Runners

By Samiya Ali

Whether it’s an embroidered lehenga, dress, or a saree, we often worry about potential wear and tear while enjoying the garment. With mindful usage, however, we can extend the longevity of our clothing. This concern is even more pronounced with embroidered soft furnishings like cushion covers or runners, as daily use increases the risk of threads getting pulled, accidental spills, or splashes from thick sauces.

But what if we told you there are simple hacks that can save you from all that stress?

Look for smart placements:

Cushions add that extra cosiness to your seating area, so being strategic about their placement is essential. If you’re hosting a large gathering, especially with kids around, consider limiting the number of embroidered pieces on display. For a big couch with multiple cushions and throws, use some embroidered cushions, and mix in complementary plain, printed or textured cushions. Similarly, place embroidered runners on console tables or cabinets where food is not going to be served, minimising the risk of spills and damage.

Check wash care instructions on the label:

Not all embroidered cushion covers or runners are suitable for dry cleaning or hand washing. Always check the wash care label provided by the brand. If it specifies dry clean or hand wash, wait until you’ve used the product for a while before cleaning it. Avoid washing or cleaning the product after just one use, as this may cause unnecessary wear and tear.

Be spot-on when it comes to spot-cleaning:

Even with careful placement, a few stains might appear on your cushions. To prevent them from becoming permanent, act quickly by gently blotting the area with a tissue. Apply a few drops of water to the stain and check for any colour bleed. If there is no bleeding, gently wash the area with mild soap or your regular shampoo, as shampoos are gentler on delicate fabrics than traditional detergents. If you notice any colour bleeding, stop immediately and opt for professional dry cleaning.

Vacuum once a week:

To maintain the colour and charm of your soft furnishings, vacuum them at least once a week. Dust accumulates daily, not just on the surface but also deep within the fabric and cushion. However, ensure that you use the right attachment head while vacuuming. Regular vacuuming helps preserve the threads and fabric, potentially saving your money on dry cleaning in the long run.

Opt for a garment steamer:

Always steam your cushions before storing them in your wardrobe. Garment steamers are less likely to scorch or damage delicate fabrics compared to traditional irons, making them ideal for delicate fabrics and embroidered designs. They effectively remove stubborn creases without direct contact with a hot iron plate, preserving the integrity of your cushions.

Store it in a cotton dust bag:

Storing your cushion in a cotton dust bag helps protect it from unnecessary creasing and reduces the risk of the embroidery threads getting pulled. When storing a runner, avoid multiple folds to prevent damage. Avoid storing any embroidered product in a plastic bag as plastic retains moisture and damages the fabric.

Quick tip – Hotel laundry bags, cotton shopping bags and even old pillow covers are much better options for dust bags than plastic bags.
